Dalian Maritime University
Dalian Maritime University (DMU) is the key maritime institution under the Ministry of Transport, People’s Republic of China. DMU enjoys a high reputation internationally as an excellent center of maritime education and training as recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The long history of the University can be traced back to 1909. In 1983, the Asia-Pacific Region Maritime Training Center was established at DMU by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the IMO. In 1985 a branch of the World Maritime University (WMU) was established. In 1997, DMU became one of the member universities of “Project 211”, a plan to build one hundred national-level universities in China.
DMU is located in southwestern Dalian, which is a famous coastal city in northeastern China with a population of six million. The University covers an area of 1.36 million square meters. The University owns the buildings for maritime sciences that contain fully functional equipment and facilities. There are additional buildings for maritime training and research, survival training, swimming pool, planetarium and libraries. DMU has a training dock and over 100 laboratories for teaching, training and research that also include a full mission ship-handling simulator and an engine room simulator. DMU also owns and operates two ocean-going training vessels.
The University consists of 19 teaching and research units, including Navigation College, Marine Engineering College, Information Science and Technology College, Transportation Management College, Environmental Science and Technology College, Transportation Equipment and Ocean Engineering College, School of Law, School of Foreign Languages, Public Administration & Humanities College, Marxism Studies College, Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Physical Education, Specialized Degrees Education College, Transportation Advanced Institute, Continuing Education College, Maritime training and research center, Ship Guidance System Research Center, and Shipping Development Research Institute. Presently DMU has 7 Post-doctoral Research Centers, 6 post-doctoral programs (R&D base), 38 Doctoral programs, 90 master’s degree programs, and 51undergraduate programs. The University is authorized to confer MBA, MPA, J.M, MTI, MEA, M. Eng., and on-the-job master’s degree.
The current student population has risen to approximately 25,000. Additionally, the university enrolls overseas students for Bachelor’s, Master’s Degrees and PhDs.
DMU has a highly qualified faculty team of 1297 staff, including 342 professors, 396 associate professors, 297 lecturers, and 53 assistant lecturers. In addition, DMU has an academic agreement with 7 academicians of the National Academy of Engineering, 79 chair professors, and 480 visiting professors.
The University has an international vision regarding academic cooperation and exchange. Up to present, DMU has established cooperative relations with 115 international renowned maritime institutions in 33 countries. The academic relationships with these sister universities are maintained through mutual visits, faculty staff and student exchanges, joint collaborative programs and joint research projects.
Moreover, the University has established long-term cooperative relationships with international organizations and institutions, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), the Global Maritime Education and Training Association (GLOBALMET), the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), the International Shipping Federation (ISF), the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), as well as some world famous shipping companies.
DMU was enrolled in the first batch of institutions under the Chinese Government Scholarship Program and began to recruit foreign students in 1955. The university was entrusted by China Scholarship Council and Liaoning Provincial Government to conduct independent recruitment of scholarship students since 2008. Apart from the government full scholarships, DMU also provides self-funded students with Dalian Government Scholarship and DMU Scholarships. Up to now, more than 5,000 foreign students and advanced professionals from over 70 countries and regions have been educated and trained at DMU.
Facing the future, DMU is determined to focus on our mission by exploring and grasping exciting opportunities, and creatively addressing new challenges. With our multiple disciplines for research and education, we will achieve our goal of upgrading the University to a high-level university with distinct maritime characteristics.
